AMNG I 1167; Mouchmov -; SNG Copenhagen -; Varbanov 1570 = Lanz 97, 845 (same rev. die); Price & Trell 39 (same rev. die); CNG 58, 907 (same rev. die). EF, green patina with traces of earthen overtones on reverse. Extremely rare architectural type.

While architectural types are known for a number of provincial issues and for the city of Marcianopolis in particular, those which depict the buildings from and aerial perspective are indeed quite rare. Ostensibly, the view depicted on this coin shows the circuit of the city with one of its most famous building complexes. The elements the engraver uses, however – the city wall, the temple with its lighted altar, and the porticos of the forum – emphasize the religious, civic, and military aspects of this city necessary to make it one of the vital municipal posts of the empire.
